How I haven’t seen this movie before today I don’t know, but JESUS CHRIST do I ever love Ken’ichi Matsuyama even more now. Premise: nerdy herbivore boy dreams of becoming a trendy bubble-gum pop musician but due to various circumstances ends up the lead singer of Japan’s most brutal death metal band. What more do you need to know?
As if the Japanese concept of what death metal is wasn’t hilarious enough, this movie also features a cameo by Gene Simmons, live tokusatsu performances gone wrong and a woman who repeatedly puts out cigarettes on her tongue. My sides hurt from laughing when the hapless mushroom-haired protagonist accidentally ordered “Choco-rape cake”. Highly recommended. GO TO DMC! (wha?)
