1 Pound no Fukuin (2008)
Just finished the drama with Kamenashi Kazuya, not the manga, but I’m posting this pic to show Linda. Based on the Rumiko Takahashi manga about a boxer and a nun - it’s a weird premise and an awkward drama (at one point Linda asked “is this going to be religious or something?” and I was like “well, I guess she likes God…”) but it had its cute moments. Adorable ending. The sports angle was a joke, obviously. And I got a bit tired of Kame running around screaming SHIISUTAAA ANJERAAAA! every two minutes but at least he looked hot (which means a lot coming from me since I’ve always found him too short to be cute, err…)
Anyhow, posting for completion’s sake since it took us a LOOONG time to get through this drama, and honestly I’ve been curious about the series for a while too. I mean, 1980s Rumiko Takahashi is amazing. And this is about a boxer, who eats too much? And a nun? Who tries to cure him of gluttony? What? Who DOES that? I first heard of it maybe 15 years ago when it was being advertised on the inside cover of this ancient copy of an Area 88 comic I bought with my own pocket-money, back when English manga was only printed in American comic book format and people traded anime VHS tapes in these sketchy fob shops off Kingsway. That was something like the first manga to ever get officially translated for a Western market, which is weird enough…
And none of that has anything to do with this drama, which was decent if a little strange and cheesy. I think I’ve had my fill of 1 Pound no Fukuin for the next while though. We have a huge backlog of dramas I’ve been meaning to watch so I’m probably going to write a post about that soon. (Been putting it off since before Christmas, ah fuuuu-)
